Poetry
Assignments
Quarter
2
Video
P.O.D. (poem of the day)
For second quarter you’ll need to find a
video poem of the day. This might be the
author reading, someone else reading, or perhaps a video collage or cartoon
based on a poem reading. I’d suggest
starting with a poem or poet that you’re interested in and then search as
searching ‘poem video’ gets you rather unwieldy results.
Blog
Entries-
As assigning these without due dates
didn’t work so well first quarter, I’ll be more specific this quarter. These should be thoughtful detailed entries
that use specific examples/quotes. One of these will be due on each of the following
dates- You get to choose which entry for each date- 10/31 and 11/25. 20 points
each.
- · Poetry reading. Attend a reading, take a picture, and discuss both the event and a particular poem with quotes. This means taking notes or buying a book, looking up a poem online, or taking a picture of a page in a book. I’d like to see thoughtful discussion of the event and the author’s work.
- · Poetry Journal/blog. Find on online poetry journal or blog that interests you (I’d avoid the first one on the Google page, just saying…) and then discuss some of the poems and the general quality/emphasis of the journal. Consider the visual effect and any additional background information provided.
Memorized
poem-
·
In this moment of
fleeting screen images, a memorized poem is a gift to yourself of wisdom or beauty
from another time. We'll use the Poetry Out Loud format found at
You will need to recite it to the class November 12th or 14th.
Video
poem-
·
Create an imovie
video of one of your poems. This should
include video of you reading it (ideally in an appropriate venue), still or
video images that develop the mood or motifs, copywrite free music, and any
other special effects you’d like to create.
You should come to class on November 18 w/ a flashdrive of all the
images, music files, and video you’ll need to assemble this in imovie. If you use found images focus on copyright
free images many of which are found here-

Final
Project-
·
On Monday
December 16th the first exam period 9-10:30, you will need to read
two or three poems to the combined classes and turn in a final version all your
finished poems. More requirements and an
assessment rubric TBD.

Poetry Expectations-
·
Write
regularly. This means noting ideas,
developing those that work into poems, workshopping some of these into finished
work. You need to keep your work in a
single location (notebook or computer folder) and have it available in class. You needn’t share everything, but I need to
see evidence of consistent writing. I’ve
also recommended a small observation notebook, which could also be a notes
section of your phone. While quantifying
all this can be difficult given the different lengths of poems, I’ll expect
20-30 poem ideas/starts, 15 completed drafts, and 8 crafted, finished poems per
quarter.
o
Keep notebook of observations/ideas in phone,
pocket, or computer folder
o
Write & collect poem drafts in a single
notebook or a single computer folder that you have in class every day.
o
Write blog entries as assigned or more
often. You may use your blog as a place
to write and collect the drafts above, but it should be on a separate tab from
the assigned blog entries.
·
Read
poetry. In addition to assigned
poems, you need to: share your Poem(s) of the Day, attend one (or more) poetry
readings, and review an online poetry journal.
All these should be in your blog.
(if you’ve already shared a POD, please add this).
o
POD blog write up- include text or link to poem with an
explanation of your reasons for choosing it.
o
Poetry reading-
This needs to include a picture of the event/venue, a description of
your response to it, and a response to one particular poem. The last can be difficult, mind you. Bring a notebook or phone to make notes. You could take a picture of a poem in a book
for sale afterwards.
o
Poetry journal blog- There are myriad online poetry
journals. This could be a chance to
research digital poetry, spoken word, or classical poetry. It can be a creative or academic
journal. Your write up needs to be a
blog post that contain a link, a response to the overall layout/impact of the
blog, and a discussion of two poems w/ specific lines referenced.
o
Blog your responses to specific poems as
assigned in Veracross and to each of our visiting poets.
o
Toward the end of the quarter, I’ll ask you to
write one blog post about your writers workshop experience noting the qualities
of voice of your workshop group members and the quality of discussion and the
kinds of feedback that feel useful or not.
·
Publish
poetry.
o
We will publish poetry as smaller class
assignments by reading poems in school, uploading poem readings on Soundcloud,
or printing and distributing individual
poems.
o
Each student will need to collect, collate and
turn in eight (8) finished poems at the end of quarter one.
o
The final project will be a published collection
of poems in digital, spoken, or printed formats. Details to follow.
Using notes from the interviews, write a poem about your classmate. Then once you've found a direction for your poem, take a picture of the classmate and create a visual that uses picture and poem effectively. Avoid cliche headshots, unless your poem is using that idea intentionally. Consider framing the image (you might use a partial image or half image) or altering (b/w, silhouette, repeated or fragmented) in a way that fits the poem. A color printed copy is due in class on Thursday.
