Course Description

Poetry
2013

                     If play and language are the most human activities,
                          then poetry reveals us at our most human.

Goals- 
The goals for this class are to read and write poetry.  We will learn to read closely and analyze poems using diverse tools.  We will write poetry using a writer’s workshop format, and eventually edit, collect and publish poems.  Poems will be defined broadly here to include written, visual, spoken word, and hybrids.   We will publish our work in a variety of ways during the term.

Assignments-
                Poet’s blog-  a place to record ideas, develop them, share them and finally publish them.
                A final project-  An anthology of poetry ‘published’ in written, digital or oral format.
                Two analytic essays explicating a poem or poems
                Poetry reading blog post w/ picture, poem & response.
                Daily assignments shared in class

Grading-
                40% creative
                                Smaller finished works and final publication
                30% analytic
                                Two essays, literary devices test, poetry reading visit, and text marking work
                30% process/daily work
                                Blog, writer’s group & in class engagement
Writer’s Group-
Despite the image of the lonely tortured poet, most authors and artists share work with a trusted group to get ideas, support and feedback.  Writers groups will meet physically and virtually to brainstorm, share work in progress, and respond to finished poems.

Visiting Poets-
We will have four visiting poets during the semester to share work and discuss process with us.
